All medical services and interventions for which referrals are needed, are secondary health care. For example, specialist care in hospitals, rehabilitation, and psychological care. Without referral the patient cannot have access to these forms of care, whether or not they have additional insurance.

Most secondary health care is reimbursed by basic health care insurance but is liable to be taken out of deductibles, depending on the policy’s terms. Please check these in order to know which costs are involved with making use of secondary health care.
